Rory Sutherland makes a change

I’m delighted to have discovered this brilliant campaign from Westpac in New Zealand that comes directly from one of Rory’s TED talks. They unashamedly credit him with the idea and have taken exactly what he suggested and put it into practice.

So many things are right about this.

First, that they don’t claim the idea as their own. Too many agencies try to take credit for ideas they’ve plagiarised from elsewhere. And it’s given the industry a very bad reputation.

Secondly, they’ve realised that this idea is a big, participatory one that has a social movement at it’s core. And they’ve then used all their advertising to point towards it. There’s no over-indulgent creative wankery here. It’s a big thought that’s been done well.

And finally, they recognised an awesome idea and were the people smart enough to actually do it.

Well done to Colenso BBDO in Aukland. And well done to Rory.

To do it as an app is where the agency can really take credit – well done them and Rory, of course….
