The ultimate in merchandising?

Perfume BookOne of my favourite books of all time is Perfume by Patrick Suskind.

So I bought a copy for my girlfriend a couple of years ago and she hated it.  I dragged her along to the film last year and she hated that too. Now I’ve found something else for her to despise: Perfume the Perfume.

It’s a special collectors edition of scents inspired by the book. They even explain which part of the book inspired each olfactory blend. And it’s beautifully presented in what looks like a red velvet coffin for a small child.

And it’s all yours for $700.

But I don’t imagine that you’d want to wear all of these scents in public. Here’s the inspiration for one of them, taken directly from the book:

” He scraped the meat (…), watered them down, plucked them, limed, bated, and fulled them, rubbed them down with pickling dung, chopped wood, stripped bark from birch and yew, climbed down into the tanning pits filled with caustic fumes, covered this ghastly funeral pyre with yew branches and earth. “
